This ride starts and stops at Grouseland. Longer and harder than the Sidling Hill Climb this route takes you over the mountain on the Old National Pike, Rt. 40. You can even see some abandoned rest areas. This ride has several views of the Sidling Hill Cut where I-68 slices through the mountain. This 355' deep gash reveals some very interesting geological strata, and if you have the chance, you can stop at the Visitor's Center off I-68. The route also takes you into Franklin County, Allegany Co. MD, Washington County MD and back to Bedford Co. PA. There is one major climb up and over Sidling Hill and numerous hills, but there are also lots of glorious vistas and exciting scenery. You can get provisions only at the Amoco Station, but the rest stop at the Amaranth School house is very interesting. The school house is preserved as it was 50 years ago and you can see the desks, books and home work on the black boards. The adjacent cemetery has a baffling headstone at the back left corner. You will understand (or not understand) when you come across Derrick's memorial stone. |
