This ride starts and stops at Grouseland
and climbs over Sidling Hill which is worth the effort for the view.
We go by the Fair View Church with its interesting cemetery. Here you
can see the headstones for the Fosters whose entire family died between
Oct 4-14, 1860. And you can see the Sidling Hill Cut where I-68 cleaves
through the mountain, a 355' deep gash which reveals fascinating geological
strata. We also go past the old school house in Amaranth, now set up
as a museum to the days when children were taught in a one room building
by a single woman who was forbidden by contract to even date. From her
meager salary she was also expected to keep the building clean and provide
the wood to heat it during the winter. Some of the hills on this ride
are hard but nothing compared to the difficulty experienced by the women
who toiled at this school. |
