Education Workshop--The Forbes Campaign & The Birth of Pittsburgh

Join a select group of Scholars and Educators in exploring the 1758 Forbes campaign and the founding of Pittsburgh. Participants will learn about the crucial role played by the Native Americans and the Pennsylvania Provincial Regiment during the expedition that resulted in the British gaining complete control of the Ohio River Valley from the French. This workshop is open to the public, and will carry 6 hours of Act 48 credit for educators. All participants will receive a free book written by the Keynote Speaker, R. Scott Stephenson. Cost is $50. Tour of Pennsylvania Bike Race
Tour de France-style espoir race. The Tour is a six-day stage race televised around the world and covering more than 450 miles of Pennsylvania’s rolling hills and city streets. Competitors are comprised of at least 20 teams of six riders each from the United States and around the world. Racers of 15 nationalities will compete including at least one Pennsylvania-based team, the PA Lightning. The Tour is a unique event to celebrate the 250th anniversary of Bedford, Ligonier and Pittsburgh, all of which were founded in a single year during the Forbes Campaign of 1758. Pennsylvania Centre Orchestra
The Bedford Springs Music Festival announces that on July 19 it will present the Pennsylvania Centre Orchestra, under the baton of Douglas Meyer, playing Vivaldi’s Four Seasons, Bach’s Double Concerto, and Handel’s Overture to his “Solomon” Oratorio and “The Entrance of the Queen of Sheba.” Preceding the concert will be a fundraising dinner held at the home of Pat and Paul Detwiler.
The concert, which begins at 7:30 P.M., will take place under a tent at Old Bedford Village, and picnicking is encouraged. It will be one of the events of the Pittsburgh 250 celebration because works of all three composers were being performed during that period.
Tickets are available at the Bedford County Visitors Bureau and Fisher’s Pharmacy in Bedford and Everett Rexall Pharmacy or by visiting ww.bedfordspringsfestival.org
Adult tickets $15, student tickets $10, and senior tickets $10.
Tickets to the 4:30 P.M. fundraising dinner, catered by Calvin House, are $100 per person and include a $15 concert ticket. In celebration of the 250 anniversary, a major reenactment will be performed. jA friendly earthen field fortification is being constructed at Old Bedford Village for the event.
